Electrolytes are found both inside and outside the body's cells, and the concentrations in these two compartments are interdependent. An electrolyte balance exists between them.
The most important electrolytes in the extracellular fluid (outside the body's cells) are sodium, chloride and bicarbonate. In the intracellular fluid (inside the cells), they are potassium, calcium and magnesium.
The body needs these substances both in sufficient quantities and in the correct proportions. A normal balance between these electrolytes helps maintain good health, physical condition and performance.
