Differences in Quality: Alpha-Lipoic Acid Is Not the Same as R-Alpha-Lipoic Acid!
The quality of alpha-lipoic acid also plays an important role: A distinction is generally made between R-alpha-lipoic acid and S-alpha-lipoic acid. Most dietary supplements contain only a small proportion of R-alpha-lipoic acid and a large proportion of S-alpha-lipoic acid, making them more affordable. However, only 100% pure R-alpha-lipoic acid, the natural form produced by the body, is effective. Only this form has extremely high bioavailability. S-alpha-lipoic acid is a synthetic form with significantly lower effectiveness.
